ABOUT
Jawline Dance Co was co-founded by Jess Crompton and Carla Harre. Upon beginning to work together at Unitec, they found this to be a natural and instinctive process and formed Jawline at the end of their third year in 2020. Jawline debuted their first show, ‘The Monotone Era’ at Basement Theater in April of 2021. Since then Jawline has produced ‘Vivid Dreaming’ which premiered in April of 2022 at the Old Folks Association hall and then remounted in September of 2022 at Basement Theater as a part of Auckland Fringe. ‘Vivid Dreaming’ was awarded ‘outstanding overall dance’ from the Auckland Fringe awards. Jawline most recently just shared their first development of ‘Central Heating’ for Tempo Dance Festival’s ‘Kete’
CARLA
Co-Founder
Carla is a freelance dancer and choreographer based in Tāmaki Makaurau. Since graduating university at Unitec, majoring in contemporary dance, she has created her own collective with Jess Crompton, Jawline Dance co. Together they choreographed and produced ‘The Monotone Era’ (2021). Which had a nearly sold out 5 night season at Basement theater. Carla is currently working on a new show with Jawline Co - ‘The Way of the Few' (2023) She is enjoying both choreographing for her collective and collaborating and dancing with her freelance community.
Carla is interested in the beauty of subtlety and fluid movements. Highlighting the human body and the intracises of movement. She enjoys creating a clear movement aesthetic that leaves the audience satisfied and moved. She wants to give the audience a taste of a storyline and theme but leave the conclusions to them.
JESS
Co Founder
Jess Crompton graduated Unitec with a Bachelors in Performing and Screen Arts majoring in Contemporary Dance in 2020 alongside Carla. It wasn't until Jess was eighteen that she realised she wanted to pursue a career in dance. Her training at Unitec gave her the opportunity to work with a wide range of tutors, practitioners and choreographers. Jess has always been interested in various areas of creative arts and also enjoys writing. Jess finds the most joy in the collaboration aspects of a Contemporary Dance process. Getting to make something alongside her friends and understand new people in a dance making environment is for her, the most fulfilling part of Jawline Dance Co and dance in general.
